Walk Along Discovery Passage

This walk along the Campbell River Estuary boasts great views of Quadra Island, marine wildlife sightings, and the occasional cruise ship navigating the scenic Discovery Passage.

From July 15th to September 15th, this iconic spit also bears witness to a longstanding Campbell River tradition: The Tyee Club. Watch rowers and anglers patiently fishing for their exclusive 30lb Tyee in quiet wood rowboats.

Dip your toes in the chilly Pacific Ocean for a truly local experience, or linger to catch the sunset from the viewing platform on the estuary side of the spit.

Tyee Rowing Traditions

A History of Fishing

Fishing for sport took off in Campbell River in the 1890s, when news got out to the international fishing community about the massive Chinook Salmon (Tyee) swimming near the estuary in August every year.

Well-heeled fishermen from all over the world began to flock to Campbell River for a chance to catch one of these giants. The world-famous Tyee Club was established later, in 1924, and has kept the momentum and enthusiasm for Tyee fishing in Campbell River high.

Historically, visiting fishermen camped in canvas tents on the Spit next to the fishing grounds, and were guided by local Laich-Kwil-Tach fishermen in cedar dugout canoes; their knowledge of the local waters indispensable to visitors.

In later years, the Painter rowboat gained in popularity and has since become an inextricable part of the history and culture of Tyee fishing in Campbell River.
