Tahsis Itinerary

The Village of Tahsis located about three hours northwest of Campbell River is home to the Mowachaht/Muchalaht, Nuchatlaht, and Ehattesaht First Nations who have been in the region in excess of 4,200 years, these traditional territories include all of the area known today as Nootka Sound. This west coast gem is a prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts with hiking, caving and kayaking all being on offer.

Day to Day

Start Your Day in Comfort

The drive out to Tahsis takes roughly three hours, you’ll want coffee and snacks, grab a quick breakfast and a coffee at a local favourite the Island Grind and head out on the road! Head northwest out of town, on Hwy 28 following the signage to Tahsis, stay on the road until the pavement ends and then get onto the Tree to Sea Drive for an unforgettable 66km ride to Tahsis.

Explore the Great Outdoors

You’ll find many points of interest along the Tree to Sea Drive, one that is worth a stop is Upana Caves. Located about 17km past Gold River, these caves are the perfect spot to get out and stretch your legs. Many of the caves in this network are large and open making it easy to poke your head in and explore a little bit! If caving is your thing and you’re an avid spelunker there are plenty of opportunities to go underground and explore a little deeper (more info on these caves HERE). Once you’ve caved to your heart\’s content, continue along the drive, marvel at the natural scenery, stunning waterfalls and keep a sharp eye out for any wildlife you might spot along the way!

Discover the Community Culture

Once you’ve arrived in Tahsis get acquainted with the town and its history. Shake off the road and embark on a self-guided historical walking tour. Learn about the local First Nations history, the town’s early settlement and it’s industrial roots, all while taking in the scenic views of the inlet.

Share Your Stories of the Wild

End your day exploring at Moutcha Bay Resort, set in the wilderness of Nootka Sound this resort offers guided sea-kayaking tours as well as wildlife tours where you will look for otters, seals, whales and the other creatures that call the west coast home. Stay in one of their luxury yurts complete with a soaking tub, shower and full kitchen. End your day on the wrap-around porch looking over the water, savouring the highlights of your trip so far.

Other Activities

Kayaking

The Village of Tahsis sits on a scenic inlet, that gives access to the wider Nootka Sound area. This is a popular jumping off point for avid sea kayakers to embark on trips out to Friendly Cove, Nuchatlitz Marine Park and Hesquiat Peninsula. There are few spots better to explore than the remote west coast of Vancouver Island.

Hiking

There are a number of hiking trails surrounding the village of Tahsis. Explore the Liener River Estuary or venture further from town and try your hand at the Maquinna Trail with 450m of elevation you are guaranteed great views overlooking the Tahsis Inlet.

Caving

The Upana Caves are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Tahsis. Over 50km of passages have been found in the mountains surrounding Tahsis ranging in difficulty. With the Upana Caves being the easiest; if you’re planning on exploring some of the other more technical caves it is recommended that you are an experienced caver or have a guide with you. Important Considerations

Into the wild, you go! There is no cell service in Tahsis and internet may be limited – leave a trip plan with someone that will know when to expect you back, before heading out on your adventures.

The road to Tahsis is completely gravel and may have active logging take your time and be prepared to pull off the shoulder when trucks are on the road. We recommend checking in on local conditions and safety information before travelling on backroads and active logging routes. Be prepared with a spare tire and a first aid kit

There is a small grocery store in Tahsis, however, if you have dietary restrictions we would advise you get your groceries in Campbell River before heading out. 

There are gas stations in both Gold River and Tahsis.
