Humans of Campbell River is a collaboration between Destination Campbell River and Bluetree Photography showcasing the stories of those who call our coastal community home. Each week we deep dive into a new story and the connections between people and place. This week we’re sharing the story of:

Crabby Bobs Seafood

Crabby Bob’s Seafood Inc. has been in operation since 1999. It all started with Crabby Bob selling live crabs from his boat. It didn’t take long for more seafood products to start coming in and for buildings to pop up on the wharf. The little shack became a place where people could come and buy their fresh local seafood.

In 2011 Crabby Bobs changed hands to a family friend Ray, not a lot changed it was still a spot for people to pick up dinner ideas along with their fresh seafood. You would always find a table on the deck with friendly faces, smiles, and stories being shared.

In 2013 the business was passed down to Crabby Abby and now here I am writing this little story for you to read. A lot has changed since I started looking after the shop!! Once I learned the way the shop operated, with the help of my family, local fisherman and my community. I was able to start sourcing out more local products that people were interested in. Learning the business was not always an easy task and I’m grateful I had the help I did.

A few years after running the shop we introduced steaming to our services offered. This has given our guests the opportunity to have us prepare seafood that comes from the local waters of the Salish Sea. From Fresh Shucked Oysters, Steamed Dungeness Crab, and B.C Spot Prawns to name a few, you will leave with a belly full of goodness and hopefully a love for our local offerings. For the seafood lover or the first-timer, we are happy to be able to share what our community is proud of.

All our products are sourced from B.C Fisherman, sustainable and traceable, which is important to us, ensuring you know where your food comes from. We do carry products from afar and these are sustainable and traceable as well.

Today I must say the most favourite part of my job is meeting new people and when kids come to visit. Excitement and lots of shrieks of joy can be heard in the shack on those days

As we look to the future we hope to be able to continue serving our customers in the same way and also with new ideas on the horizon. I must thank all who have believed in me, even when it was tough for me. For my family who helps in so many ways and to have the opportunity to teach and educate young members who join our team. Gratitude is all that comes to mind when I think about where I’ve come from and for my Father in Law in heaven for giving me this chance to shine.
